Even if Kelvin and Naofumi treat their new teammates as valued warriors and friends rather than servants, it's still hugely distasteful, and Kelvin wasn't even bothered by the presence of slavery. He's taking part in a nasty isekai trend that Naofumi of Shield Hero fame would know all about, paying good money to slavers in exchange for a slave girl's companionship. The single biggest strike against Kelvin is his patronage of his isekai world's slave trade.
He'd better clean up his act quickly if he even wants to be mentioned in the same breath as Rimuru. That said, though, Kelvin has some ground left to cover, and in some ways, he is actually a despicable isekai lead. Kelvin is taking a few appreciable steps to follow Rimuru Tempest's example as an OP isekai hero who has more to think about than beating up his enemies for fun. Her character would have been wasted if Naofumi the Shield Hero was there instead. Sara has now become the new Milim Nava, and it's a good look. Where many isekai heroes like Naofumi or Subaru would see a tough boss battle or a mortal foe, the generous Kelvin and Rimuru see a more constructive opportunity. The same happened when Kelvin listened to the demon Victor and agreed to look after the demon king's daughter Sara rather than slay or seal her away in return for a reward. Kelvin has done something similar for the undead knight Gerard, viewing him as a valuable friend in the making rather than a monster to slay for a quest. Rimuru repeatedly fought his enemies to a standstill before recruiting them, such as the vengeful ogre tribe or the pig-like orc army, and certainly for the wild demon lord Milim Nava. They see the potential in everyone, even misguided or antagonistic warriors, and that opens the door for redemption or a new lease on life for those characters. To start with, Kelvin and Rimuru are resourceful heroes who are generous enough to give almost anyone a second chance.
